Things to Do Near Our Nelson Bay Group Accommodation

Our location on your way into Nelson Bay is easy to find, and we are opposite the beach and central to all of Port Stephen’s many activities and attractions. Among our favourites to enjoy are:

  • The Worimi Conservation Lands: Here, you will find 4,200 hectares of Aboriginal cultural significance, home to the magnificent Stockton Bight Sand Dunes. This natural wonder stretches for 32 kilometres, among the most significant moving sand features in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy the dunes on foot, horse or camelback, with an organised four-wheel drive tour or your own vehicle. The adventurous can even experience a thrilling trip down the 40-metre-high dunes on a sandboard. Also, consider a cultural quad bike tour to learn more about our treasured local Aboriginal heritage.

  • Exciting surfing beaches: Our area offers two stunning surfing beaches, Birubi and One Mile. For the more active, consider Port Stephens Surf School beginner lessons or go ahead and surf our solid breaks. Otherwise, explore the delicate rock pools for interesting marine life or visit Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters for up-close interaction with these fascinating animals.

  • Safe swimming beaches: All the beaches around Nelson Bay are perfect for safe swimming. The wide expanse of popular One Mile Beach offers swimming, dune boogie boarding and even skinny dipping on Samurai beach. Other suitable options are Little Nelson Bay, Roy Wood Reserve, Boat Harbour, and Sunset Beach.

  • Snorkelling and marine mammal watching: Boat Harbour and Fishermans Bay offer a rocky reef for snorkelling. Marvel at the local marine life, including bream, wrasse, black rock cod and delightful sea turtles. Also, look out for our resident bottleneck dolphins and humpback whales migrating along this part of our NSW coast during May and November.

  • Hiking in Tomaree National Park: To the east of us, you’ll find this striking natural area offering coastal walks with breathtaking panoramic views across Port Stephens. So enjoy a hike, add a picnic or even a barbie.

  • Engaging beach fishing: Nelson Bay offers numerous beaches and estuaries ideal for shore fishing. A wide array of fish is caught here by anglers, including kingfish, tailor, Australian salmon, snapper, luderick, whiting, bream, whiting, flathead, mulloway and leatherjacket.

  • Nelson Bay Leisure: Enjoy shopping and locally sourced fresh seafood cuisine, including our renowned fish and chips shop. After dinner, take a dawdle down to the d’Albora Marina to see traditional fishing boats rubbing shoulders with high-end cruisers and yachts.

So, whether swimming, snorkelling, surfing, whale or dolphin spotting, hiking, sandboarding, fishing, shopping, or dining, Nelson Bay has something for everyone.
